A multimodal transportation is a transportation which uses different means of transport in its route. In this process, terminals are engaged where cargoes are re-loaded from one type of transport to another.
As a rule, multimodal transportation is used for out-of-gage cargoes and containers with intercontinental destinations. Such cargoes are delivered to sea ports by car or railway transportation and further are transported by liner ships across the ocean after which the cargoes are again re-loaded to railway or automobile platforms and are delivered to the consignee. Besides this, there are multimodal transportations with participation of air transport but they are less spread.
In case of a multimodal transportation, several participants are involved - namely: carriers, warehouses, ground terminal services. It is very important to accurately coordinate the actions of all of the links of this chain which is possible given knowledge and experience in different types of transportation.
